“Most people gaze neither into the past nor the future; they explore neither truth nor lies. They gaze at the television.” Radiohead

See… she’s an artist you guys

I don’t know how this happened.  I’m usually right on top of this kind of thing, but somehow it slipped by me.  The only reason I know about it now is because I was sick this week and spent an afternoon on my couch.  My DVR was acting funny so I was flipping around for movies when I came upon it – Shahs of Sunset.  I’m going to blame it on the cold, if I was in my right mind I would have flipped by it right away, but I was very slow that day – there’s only so much energy you can have when all you put in your body is Airborne and Advil Cold and Sinus – and I hate- watched a few minutes of it.  Somehow that turned into 6 episodes and now I’m officially hooked.

This show is a train wreck.  These people make the Kardashians look industrious and the Real Housewives of Wherever look virtuous.  It Is Spectacular.  The show is about a group of Iranian Americans who live in LA, underemployed and overindulged.  The main guy is named Reza – at first I hated him and now I wish he was my best friend.  He is openly gay and the social center of these crazies who struggles with being half Muslim and half Jewish.  He is so over the top it’s almost normal.

The other guys on the show are Sammy and Mike.  Mike is easily the most likeable of the group, he is recently down on his luck (real estate maybe?  Can’t remember) and humble and sweet while still thinking he’s a player (he is not).  Sammy is a heavy set guy who, in one episode, got set up on a blind date with a way out of his league pretty girl who he told she was “fine, but you need to keep it tight, don’t get flabby.”  Uh, what now chubby?

The girls are another story all together.  Hands down my favorite girl is GG – she does not have a job, lives off of her father, and spends her days shopping.  She is also, bonus, a rageaholic.  In every scene there is a sidebar where she tells the camera she is “not going to get upset”, then there’s a huge fight over nothing where she threatens someone with a machete and then another sidebar where she says “yeah, I got upset, but you don’t know how hard it is to be me.”  No, I don’t, and I hope I never meet her ever, but I love to watch her.

There’s an almost normal girl named MJ who is fairly average and actually has a job but then at least once an episode she binge drinks and does something hideous.  Proof of how small their circle is, one time Sammy tries to set her up on a blind date and it turns out that she had already dated the guy for a year.  Nice!  The last girl is Asa, who is an “artist” by which I mean that she makes music that when I hear it makes me long for a nice new album by Yoko Ono.  It’s so bad that it’s almost good but my favorite part is when she describes it she consistently calls it “galactic”.  Exactly what I was thinking.

So, it’s hard to believe that there is a Bravo show I have not watched and hated, but there you go.  The new season starts on December 2 and my DVR is anxiously waiting to record every psychotic moment.
